Main message!
I really don’t know why people brought “Humpback Whale” als LARGEST HOLDER CLASSIFICATIONS. The blue whale is the biggest creature on planet earth, EVER existed and still existing. Even bigger than the Argentinosaurus, the biggest Dinosaur ever discovered.
So I really want to set this WONDERFUL LIST straight: if you own more than 5000 BTC, you are a BLUE WHALE! 🙂 Now, read on to find out more interesting stats about Bitcoin & Crypto holders!
How many Shrimps are there?
Talking about ‘real’ shrimps, well, there are at least 300 species existing.
In our crypto space, shrimps own almost 5% of all the bitcoin. While this doesn’t seem like much, the shrimps play an important role: around 95% of all bitcoin holders are shrimps (which translates to give or take 23.5 million addresses!). While around half of them only hold 0.001 bitcoin or fewer, 8% of them hold 0.1 to 1 bitcoin. Again, some of these numbers don’t sound like a lot. But, when all ‘crypto-shrimps’ together own 800,000 bitcoin, the power of unity really comes into play. We’re in this together!
How many Whales are there?
Now with whales, it’s a bit of a different story. Under 2,500 accounts are in possession of around 40% bitcoin. When you find out that there are roughly 100 million total accounts, you understand the ‘power of the whale’.
However, the crypto whale population is growing. This year, an all-time high of 2,334 addresses hold 1000 or more bitcoin. Fun fact: Bulgaria at one point was one of the biggest Bitcoin Whales. They were what we now classify a true ‘Blue Whale’, being in possession of at least 213,000 bitcoin. However, they didn’t invest: Bulgaria seized the bitcoins from the results of an organized crime crackdown.
More interesting stats
Some more interesting statistics about Bitcoin’s total shares:

- 40% of all whales are blue whales.
- Miners are in possession of almost 10% of all bitcoin shares.
- Exchanges own 12% to 13% bitcoin.
